Glass Block Windows

Glass block replaces a failing basement window with a solid, mortared panel.  No sash to pry, no frame to rot, and daylight without the view in.

We've been building and setting glass block across Will, Cook, and DuPage counties since 1986.  Most basement openings are finished in a single day.

Glass Block Basement Windows

Most of the glass block we install goes into basement openings where the original steel or wood unit has given out.

A glass block panel replaces the whole assembly rather than patching it.

  • Built to the Opening You Have

Old basement openings are rarely square, and almost never a catalog size. We measure each one and build the panel to fit rather than shimming a stock unit into place.

  • Vented and Dryer Vent Options

A latching hopper vent gives you cross-ventilation when you want it. We can also set a dryer vent block directly into the window so the exhaust runs outside with no gap in the seal.

  • Sealed at the Perimeter

We pull rotting wooden sills and seal where the panel meets the masonry. That perimeter is where most air movement through a basement opening starts.

Sizes, Patterns, and Custom Panels

Glass block is built up from individual units, so the panel is sized to the opening rather than the other way around.

  • Standard and Non-Standard Openings

Typical basement openings fall in a common range, but we build to whatever is there.

  • Thinline Block

We use Thinline block at 3⅛" thick. It's lighter than full-depth block, which matters in older openings that were never built to carry the extra weight.

  • Pattern Choices

Wave, diamond, and ice patterns differ in how much they obscure the view. We'll show you samples before anything is ordered.

Still Deciding if Glass Block is Right for You?

Why Homeowners Choose Glass Block

  • Harder to Break Into

No Sash or Frame to Pry — a mortared panel has no moving parts and no frame edge to work a bar into.

Solid Through the Opening — Thinline block is 3⅛" of glass set in mortar across the full opening.

  • Privacy Without Losing Daylight

Obscure Patterns — wave and diffused patterns pass light while breaking up the view from outside.

No Curtains or Film Needed — the privacy is in the block itself, so nothing to maintain.

  • Nothing to Paint, Rot, or Rust

Maintenance-Free — glass and mortar don't need refinishing the way wood and steel units do.

Stops Basement Drafts — sealing the opening cuts the air movement that makes a basement cold through an Illinois winter.

What Glass Block Windows Cost

Most glass block basement openings run $550 to $950 installed.  Where a given opening lands depends on size, pattern, and whether it needs a vent unit.

That's an installed price, not a materials quote — it covers removing the old window, building the panel, setting it, and sealing the perimeter.

  • What Moves the Number

Opening size — larger panels use more block.

Vent units — a hopper or dryer vent block adds to the panel cost.

Condition of the opening — rotted sills or damaged masonry take extra work.

How We Install Glass Block Windows

Every panel is built for the opening it's going into.  Our own crews do the work start to finish — no subcontractors.

  • We Measure the Opening

We come out and take the actual dimensions rather than working from a standard size.

  • We Build and Set the Panel

The old unit comes out, the block goes in with mortar, and the perimeter is sealed on both sides.

  • Usually One Day

Basement glass block installation is a one-day job in nearly every case.
